I reached my goal for my documentary a couple of days ago (with 33 days to go in the campaign). Wow.
It's a weird, kind of embarrassing, and kind of humiliating thing for me to do (asking for money), so I probably won't write much more about the campaign from here on out.
But I do want to say this:
It has also been a powerful and humbling experience for me. It almost brings tears to my eyes every time I see a new donation has come in. Whether it is from people I know really well, people I hardly know, or people I don't know at all... it is an equally powerful and humbling experience. Friends have donated, fellow birth people, filmmakers, and other names that I can't even place.
A total of 39 people so far.

A friend of mine was telling me how she thought it was funny how I had the same perk (an on-screen credit) for any amount given. I told her it was because I had nothing else to give. But I was thinking about it some more, and it's not just that. It's more that every single one of the donations means a great deal to me. Like, maybe one person's $5 is another person's $50, you know? The intention behind it is the same: somebody is giving money in love and support of me or my project.
And that means a lot.

As a good friend of mine told me when I was crying about this at playgroup one day (long story, don't ask): "It's okay to ask for things."
And so it is.

Congratulations. I recently started following your blog and am interested to see how your project goes. Out of curiosity, have you watched the documentary by Ricki Lake "The Business of Being Born"? I found it on Netflix and just noticed that they created a follow up documentary that I haven't watched, also. I am not sure the direction you are going to go with the documentary yet, but I found this one very interesting and informative. Best of luck to you.
Hi, Virginia. Thank you for your comments. I have seen "The Business of Being Born". It's good. I haven't seen the follow ups though. There are a couple of other birthy documentaries out there ("Pregnant in America", "Orgasmic Birth", "The Face of Birth")... and they are all probably what I would describe as more political then what I want to do with mine. So, hopefully I'll be able to offer something unique and beautiful to the world of birth and film. :)
Allison, this documentary is a gift to all of us. I am so excited to see this, and I know it will be amazing. Your drive, vision, and commitment are remarkable and inspiring. We are all here for each other; life is a give and take. This is about something bigger than a personal desire; it is a calling. It is your duty to fulfill it and ours to do what we can to help.
