We went to Rocky Mountain National Park a week or so ago.
While there, I made fun of the people who got out of their cars to take pictures of nearby elk. "Why would they need pictures of elk?" I said. "They could just google pictures of elk if they wanted to see a picture of an elk. Or buy a postcard." I'm of the mindset that vacation pictures should have people in them, unless they're trying to be arty or something (like I occasionally try to be, see above).
But then I took this picture:
"And you were just making fun of the people who were taking pictures of the elk," Vernon said.
"But these were so CLOSE!" I said.
Then we took what might possibly be the best family photo we've ever taken. I would use it for our Christmas cards, if I was into having "perfect family photo" Christmas cards (more on that later). Here it is:
Interesting fact: It was 85 degrees on the ground, and 62 degrees in the alpine region of the mountains.
Here are some more interesting things that I've learned on my travels:
1) Dan Akroyd is into UFOs and was a speaker at the annual Roswell UFO Festival in 2007.
2) In Connecticut, garage sales are called tag sales.
3) People leave large appliances on the side of the roads throughout rural Texas.

tell me more about the Park. I miss it and want to live vicariously through you. I can pretend that it's just me and Dan again.
Wow, that IS a fabulous family photo! But yes, too perfect for one of your Christmas cards. I was just thinking about those the other day, and it made me wonder what you have up your sleeve for this year. You have the BEST Christmas cards. Ever. Maybe you can do a recap for all of your blog readers? Build the anticipation for this year? :)
BTW, I love the picture of the squirrel and bird friends on the rock - pretty cool that you caught them together!
I've lived in Texas a total of 8 years and don't think I've ever seen an appliance on a road anywhere. And for 3 of those years, I lived in one of the most rural places you can get. What part of Texas were you in?
Rachel - I think it was somewhere between Amarillo and Odessa???
People can be so disgusting. I've found dirty diapers in the rivers around here - I don't even understand the mindset that would allow you to throw a dirty diaper into a river you plan to visit again. Usually I find old appliances stacked up in ravines or in the corner of fields... I must be thinking a little too rural, LOL!
I love the animal picture! I always laugh (secretly) at people who take photos at zoos. I don't get it.
I am looking forward to hearing what you think about "perfect family photo" pictures. I always try to get one every year, but it does not work out, so I have still never sent one. This year I am considering sending an awful family picture in which at least one of us is crying or running off or throwing something, because that would be a better depiction of our real life.
That really is a great family picture. You could definitely use it for that card. If that is something you wanted to do, of course.
in CT, we also call garage sales yard sales. any of the three would be appropriate, really. and wondering how you came into this tidbit while in the Rocky Mountain National park?
Kristin - The tidbit came from my past travels, not at Rocky Mountain. Does CT also call them rummage sales?
indeed we do. rummage sales are usually in a church. tag sale is a somewhat snooty way of saying yard sale. and the irony (or vicious cycle if you will) of a garage sale is that most people would need to have one to make enough room in the garage to have one!
Nice picture Allison! Although not your usual...you all sort of look fake, especially with that big mountain behind you.
