The Big Announcement

Here it is. The big announcement.

First, let's start out with a picture:

This was the picture we used to tell everyone that we were pregnant with Ezra. But that doesn't really have anything to do with the announcement today because here's the deal...

We're moving back to Minnesota.

I feel like I need to explain. Last you heard, Vern was deciding between whether to work as a chiropractic associate or start his own business (after finding out that he wasn't accepted for training in the health center program in Florida). He decided to start his own business.

And he was planning on opening that business in Vermont... up until a couple weeks ago.

During the past couple of weeks, here is what happened:
  1. We were planning on going back to Minnesota for the month of December before we moved on to Vermont, and I found myself looking forward to that time back in Minnesota more than to our move to Vermont.
  2. I talked with someone who had lived in Vermont for four years, and she told me some things about it that I had not realized... the lack of sunny days and the fact that the library system there sucked donkeys (my words, not hers).
  3. My friend Jen (from Minneapolis) said that she would miss seeing Astrid and Peace grow up together. And I realized that I would miss that (and other stuff like that) too.
I was telling all of this to Vernon and he said, "So, what is it that you're hoping to get from Vermont that you can't find in Minnesota?" And I said, "I don't know. A quaint, little crunchy town, I guess."

So, now we have decided to move back to Minnesota where Vern will open up his practice. And we are on the look out for that "quaint, little crunchy town" that I so desire (within reach of my community in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area). Something with walkable neighborhoods, a main street, a good library, a little downtown... and maybe throw a gazebo in there somewhere as well.

Here is what we have come up with:

Hopkins
Hastings
Northfield
Rosemount

We have also thrown Moorhead into the mix (which is 3-1/2 hours away from my community in Minneapolis/St. Paul), but my mom lives there, which is what makes it appealing. Plus, it has a lower cost of living, and it would have lower start-up costs for the business.

(Note: I guess the psychic was right... the rubber band has snapped us back.)

So, when we move back to Minnesota on November 18 (a day before Vern's graduation ceremony which he will now be able to attend), we will spend some time checking out those towns and figuring out where to go next. (We'll be living with Vern's brother in Lexington during the process.)

I feel kind of funny moving back because there was a going away party involved with my moving that had hugs, nice things written about me, and even some money (I know, a pretty sweet deal, right?)... and now I am moving back after ONLY THREE FREAKING MONTHS! Who the hell has a going away party when they are only gone for three months?!? Me, that's who.

But, then again, I did sell practically everything we owned because I thought we'd be gone forever, so, ha ha... the joke's on me.

Good for you! I figured you were pregnant so I thought," I knew it!" when I saw the pic, jokes on me.

I agree on the lack of sunny days, that's one reason I wanted to move away from NH, but miss my friends and sense of familiarity so much I wanna go back. Its easy to idealize when your not there I guess. Well congrats on making a choice that will be be good for everyone. It always nice to know you have found home.

YAY!

Another area I'll throw out there for you. Hugo, Forest Lake and Wyoming. We live in Hugo, and it's pretty small and quiet, depending on where in the city you look :)

I knew it! Congratulations!!

PS: I really like Hopkins, personally. We lived there before we bought a house in Crystal (I do not recommend Crystal). Hopkins is a cute little town that feels like it has some history, and I like that. I haven't been to Northfield but they do have a co-op, which is a big bonus.

This is great news!! I was HOPING that this was what the news was, and then when you had the pee stick picture I was kind of disappointed (not that it would have been bad)...until I read on! So maybe this means there's a chance you would be able to be photographer at my birth in late-April/early-May! So pick somewhere close enough to St. Paul to make that feasible, please. I guess Moorhead is out, but Hopkins or even Hastings would be good. ;)
The mention of co-ops above made me think of St. Peter, MN--it has a great co-op too. But probably too far away for picture-taking. Well, I'll be in touch depending on whether your ultimate destination makes picture-taking feasible.

ahahahaha!! You threw me off with the picture at first, and I love the fact that you had a going away party thrown for what turned out to be a 3 month leave :) I'm SO HAPPY you're coming back! Your friends (myself included) are a lucky bunch...isn't it the wish of everybody throwing a going away party for a cherished friend that the friend somehow either won't leave, or will come back after a short time? We got our wish!

And, fyi, you pretty much described my city. Walking paths, gazebos, a good library, close to the Cities, awesome mama friends (me, Laura, and my a few other friends of mine who you haven't met yet but would love.) Ok, so the main street and downtown are debatable, but we have our own versions. Check us out *cue Explore Minnesota theme music

so thrilled and excited! I missed you and I don't even see you that much!

And I loved living in Hopkins. Very small town feel. I rented this awesome little house on a tree-lined street...

I find myself tearing up at this news! I am SO happy you are moving back - I feel that I really wanted to get to know you so much more than I got the chance to! I vote for Hopkins, btw!

HI Allison,
I always say people come back to MN. I did. It is a great place to live!!!!
When we were deciding where to buy a house we checked out Northfield and I thought it was really nice. It def. had that small town, quaint, crunchy feel to it. Looking forward to seeing you soon. Joe is going to be so super siked, he was jsut talking about how Ezra was always so nice to him!

Stillwater and Bayport have a small town feel, walking neighborhoods, downtowns, good libraries, plenty of parks and a co-op. :)

See, all my denial that you'd moved was worth something. Now I can pretend you were off vacationing ;-) Welcome Back!

Hope I get to see you and your children again some time. Congratulations on the decision! Linden Hills in Mpls is just ever so the perfect small town in a big city.

Oh you goofball. You had me inhale with that first picture.

Then, you said you were moving, which is awesome for you guys, and I'm happy to hear!

Too bad its not New Jersey... we suffer from a serious lack of crunchy here.

it appears that nobody put a plug in for MOORHEAD! So I will. I love it here! I love living 5 miles from Walmart, Cashwise, Target and not having to really drive through any town to get to them-I don't like lots of traffic or people. The cost of living is much lower! Even compared to GF our gas prices usually are 5 to 10 cents lower a gallon. I can look out my window and see for miles and see the beautiful sunsets and night sky-its very peaceful. (my neice from nashville was home and couldn't believe how beautiful the sky at dusk was or how many stars there really were) And your mom lives here! What a great treat for grandkids to grow up with grandma! There is a library, I really don't go to it but I have friends that do and I think its alright--Dilworth in the summer also has a book club thing for the kids through community services. We also have buffalo state park just a few miles away and lots of parks and bike trails. And several marathon or half marathon races. Its a great place to raise a family. The down fall is WIND! I get annoyed with it. The other is when I looked for a chiro to take Taylor to early last spring there are many many many of them! Most in Fargo/WEst Fargo. Not really sure about Moorhead, Dilworth or even Glyndon, DL, Hawley. Good luck with your decision. Its huge to open your own business-lots of things to get in order!

Ok, seriously, if you wanted to know how we all felt about you, you didn't need to go to such a big production....you could have just asked! Either way, I don't care as long as you are moving back here! You should fb with Josefina about Northfield as she lived there for a few years and most of her peeps were in Mpls area. As you may recall we were set to move there and didn't and Joesefina gave us some nice insights. My two cents are you should just give in and live in Mpls. You will be driving here all the time anyway!! If you flat out refuse that, then my vote would be for Northfield. :) Yeah, welcome home Kuznias!

I've moved back to MN several times after thinking I was finally moving. And I had a good-bye party and came back from Sweden after only ONE month, so there... nothing to worry about. Everyone will just be delighted to have you back.
I figure some times we need to go away for a while to see what we appreciate about a certain place. Sounds like that's what you did.

I think Northfield could work for you, though not super cheap if you're buying. Do look into what's beyond the cute downtown and liberal college scene. When we lived there, never saw any families with young kids out and about. Any place downtown was filled with college kids and the occasional teacher. But from what I've heard that changed just a year after we moved! Though I haven't been back to prove it;).

Rosemount smells really yucky, doesn't it? At least from off of Hwy 52, plus it's really a suburb with all the sprawl around it.

For places close to the Cities but not too near, I prefer the Taylors Falls area. My kind of nature.

Good luck!
Josefina.

Oh for crying out loud!! Yippeee!

And just give in and move to south Mpls already! There are plenty of quaint little neighborhoods where you can walk to stuff. Look along the creek or near the Seward co-op or near Aileen and Mariah. Might as well save yourself all the driving and gas money to get yourself into the cities several times a week when you come to see all us awesome ladies.

Oh, and by the way, I always knew you were coming back. I just knew.

Oh, and the comment awhile back about the pants - that you must have gotten new ones since there were no holes in the pic - that was me. I post as anonymous b/c I can't figure out how to do it thru any of those other fancy venues they offer.

Shall we be planning your "Coming Back" party yet?
-Barbara
